Fluffy Heroes & Their Human Handlers Save Lives
Laurel Mountain Canine Search & Rescue is a nonprofit team of canines and handlers that assists in the locating of lost or missing individuals. The initiative began in 2017 when members of their team recognized the need in Tioga County for this kind of service.
Each team that handles a dog has to learn how to “read” their dog. The communication protocol is very complex and different with every dog. Most of the animals begin their training as puppies.
The team itself, since 2017, has been involved with approximately 80 searches. They are a 501c3 nonprofit and their staff is 100% volunteer based. “We do look for grants when we are able to,” said chief Lisa Rice. “But we’re always looking for support from the public too. Monetary support is important, but it’s also important to us that we’re able to find new members.”
