Fair Queen Crowned for 2018!

by Sara Vogt - August 6, 2018

The Tioga County Fair week begins with the evening of the crowing of the 2018 Tioga County Fair Queen. The new queen then presides over the activities of the week that officially start on August 6th, at 3:00 PM and runs until the 11th.

This year five young women stepped up to compete for the title of the queen; Natalie Kalyan, Trecia Spencer, Karmen Short, Bridget Kennedy and Harlee Brooks. They were all required to write an essay, interview with the judges, give a speech, and answer an impromptu question.

The judges chose Karmen Short to reign as the 2018 Tioga County Fair Queen. Karmen is the daughter of Scot and Peggy Short of Westfield. She is a 17-year-old senior at Cowanesque Vally High School. Karmen is a Tri-athlete at CV, playing volleyball, basketball, and softball. She is Vice-President of FFA and a member of the student council. Harlee Brooks was chosen to be the first alternate fair queen. Harlee Brooks is the daughter of Robert and Laurie Brooks. She is a 16-year-old senior at Wellsboro High School. Harlee is a two-time National Accredited Parliamentarian and is the President of the Grand Canyon FFA Chapter. Harlee is also a member of the 4H Tioga County Council.

On the broadcast, Home Page correspondent Lauren Gooch spoke with Karmen and Harlee about their role in encouraging young women. Lauren also spoke to Jennie York, secretary for the fair, about some of the upcoming activities. Jennie mentioned the concert on Monday night with Unspoken and the free fireworks that follow. Tuesday – Senior Day, Wednesday – Family Day, Friday – Demolition Derby, and Saturday – lumberjack competition. For a complete schedule for the Tioga County Fair visit the link listed here.
