Dunham’s Corner – Mary Wells Days 2016!
In today’s feature, Ann Dunham Rawson met with WHP today to describe the Mary Wells Days of yesteryear and to highlight a few of the amazing items on sale this weekend. Check it out to learn more!
Did you know Wellsboro is named after Mary Wells Morris? Mary Wells Morris was one of the first residents of the Wellsboro borough in the early 1800s, and her husband, Benjamin Morris, is considered the founder of our beautiful town. According to the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce website, it is believed it was Mr. Morris who named Wellsboro after his bride.
After the completion of downtown Wellsboro in the late 1960s, Mary Wells Days was established as a town holiday. Local businesses celebrated by hosting an annual parade that filled the street, while the Penn Wells Hotel hosted a special breakfast, at one time even encouraging guests to wear period attire in honor of Mary Wells.
While it may not be officially recognized anymore, Dunham’s Department store still pays homage to Mary Wells Days with a fantastic sidewalk sale! Friday through Sunday, May 27th-29th, shoppers can browse merchandise in the open air to find a vast assortment of spectacular deals on the sidewalk in front of Dunham’s. Great savings can also be found inside during this special event. (Additional sidewalk sales run continually through Labor Day, so don’t miss out!)
