Dickens & Christmas on Main Street

by Sara Vogt - December 5, 2019

On this broadcast, Ellen Bryant, President of Wellsboro Hotel Company, joined Sara Vogt, Vice President of the Home Page Network, to discuss two wonderful weekends to visit Wellsboro, in Tioga County.

The Best Dressed Showcase is entering its fourth year in Dickens of A Christmas in 2019.
In 2018 over 50 participants showed up, dressed in their 1840’s outfits and entered the Best Dressed Showcase! A grand mixture of couples, families, friends, and singles displaying their creativity and personality while enjoying the opportunity to take a step back in time for the days of Dickens! The top five participants received gift baskets from local merchants to celebrate their participation. The event will take place again this year on the Dickens of a Christmas Weekend on Saturday the 7th of December 2019.

TO PARTICIPATE THIS YEAR in the Best Dressed Showcase simply stop by the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street and register from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Dickens Day and sign up in the lobby and receive a number. OR simply pre-register by e-mailing Sara Vogt at sara@thehomepagenetwork.com with your information.

At 12:45 PM meet at the outdoor performance space located outside of the Deane Center at Main and Central Ave and line up for the judging!
This year we will have a gold and silver winner each receiving a hat from Christine A. Moore Millinery and a basket of gifts from area merchants. There will also be other gifts and surprises for those who join in on the fun!

On stage will be Christine A. Moore, owner of Christine A. Moore Millinery of New York. She will provide expert commentary and history about the costumes worn by the contestants. The judges will then have the daunting task of selecting ‘The Best Dressed” for Dickens 2019. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to stroll down Main Street with the winners immediately following the Showcase.

During the second portion of the broadcast, the following weekend of December 13th through the 15th was discussed. Ellen pointed out that many family-friendly activities and events were happening from Friday until Sunday.

She also mentioned that one of the main focus points during the weekend is the almost 30 locations where Shiny-Brite Christmas ornaments will be displayed. In 1940, Wellsboro’s Corning Glass Works modified its Ribbon Machine, originally used to make light bulbs, so that it could be used to create ornaments. Once modified, the machine was able to produce about 300,000 ornaments per day. Corning began mass-producing ornaments at the request of Max Eckhardt, a German immigrant who had previously imported ornaments from his native country to sell in the US. Eckhardt’s company, Shiny Brite, decorated the glass balls made by Corning and sold them to department stores.

History tells us that over ninety percent of the Christmas bulbs made for the world during this time came from our plant here in Wellsboro.

Christmas Carol Sing-A-Long Friday, December 13th at 7:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church at 130 Main Street.
