Destroyers’ End Regular Season, Will Host Playoff Series

by Jared Wiker - July 25, 2021

It was His Tabernacle Family Church of Mansfield Night at Shaute Field as the Mansfield Destroyers wrapped up their regular season on Saturday July 24th. Lilia Lopez opened with the National Anthem and Pastor Dan Dykes threw out the first pitch.

The Destroyers had a long day at the ballpark to finish the regular season. Mansfield started the day in dramatic fashion walking off with a 7-6 win over the Genesee Rapids to finish a game that was suspended earlier in the season. The Destroyers then faced the Rochester Ridgemen for a double header. After losing the first game of the double header 9-5, the Destroyers ended with a 3-2 win over Rochester.

The Ridgemen took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning before the Destroyers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Mansfield’s offense walked in the second run after Bryce Porter took ball four and Tyler Castelli scored from third base. Mansfield’s Willie Schwarick led the day with two home runs, hitting a home run in each game of the doubleheader, including one to dead center field in game two. Starting pitcher Kyle Smith led the Destroyers on the mound picking up the win after pitching four innings with seven strikeouts. Landon Higgerson earned the save in the seventh inning for the Destroyers, throwing two straight strikeouts with runners on second and third.

The wins sealed a 28-8-1 record for a first place finish and a bye to start the playoffs for the Mansfield Destroyers in the NYCBL’s Western Division. The Destroyers will return to Shaute Field in Mansfield tomorrow July 27th at 4:35pm to host the winner of the Rochester Hornell single game play-in game this afternoon.
