Community Responds To Census Questions

by James Nobles / Roger Bunn - July 3, 2020

Currently we are still in the self-response phase of the 2020 census which means there’s still time for you to complete your census online, by phone or by mail.

Starting July 16, census takers will begin interviewing households that have yet to respond to the 2020 Census.

The importance of completing the census cannot be understated, every resident of Tioga County that does not complete the 2020 census results in a $2,000 annual loss of funding for key county initiatives such as schools, hospitals, and fire departments and I know none of us want that to happen.

Presently as a nation we are at a 62% response rate. Pennsylvania is doing slightly better with a 65% completing; however in Tioga County we are only at a 53%.

I’m sure that with all that’s been happening in and around Tioga County these past few months, your census mailer may have slid to the bottom of the pile. We are asking, please, take a few minutes to complete the census. It’s truly very quick and easy.

If Tioga county is only at a 53% response rate, and the state is at a 65% response rate, that means other counties are doing much better. We need to ensure we are getting our fair share. Until now we have talked mostly about funded programs. Did you know that the number of Representative a State has in congress is determined solely on population? We need to ensure we are represented. For questions concerning the census and assistance with responding to the survey, call (570) 787-5000.
