Community Gathers for Winter Celebration

by Sara Vogt - February 17, 2020

This past weekend Wellsboro invited Tioga County and beyond to cast off the blues of winter and enjoy the fun of celebrating winter!

It all began on Friday night, February 14th and continued into Sunday afternoon February 16th with many activities, concerts, hikes, skis, singers and food opportunities for the entire family.

On Friday night Lou Del Bianco presented the Untold Story of Mt. Rushmore’s Chief Carver, his grandfather, Luigi Del Bianco. Luigi was an Italian-American sculptor. On Sept 16, 2017, the National Park Service dedicated a plaque to Luigi Del Bianco in his honor.

On Saturday Lou Bianco also did a presentation for children ages 4 through 12 for the Deane Little Beans program, where he entertained the children with dancing and singing from around the world.

Some of the other events on Saturday starting at 8 AM was the annual FFA pancake breakfast with farmers and children under six earing free. Also starting in the 8 AM hour was the first ice carving of the day with six more to follow at many locations thoughout town.

Not only did they carve the seven pieces but the ice carvers did an ice speed carving contest which is always entertainng to watch.

Gary Hilfiger was busy during the day also carving but his choice of materials was wood not ice. There were many carved animals for those visting to see displayed in the Deane Center Lawn.

Many locations in town particpated in the Chili with a Chance for Chocolate Taste – Off benefitting Second Chance Animal Sanctuaries. Also included in the activities of the day was wine tastings, winter brew tastings, and cookie tastings.

Wrapping up the weekend on Sunday you could have climbed Mt. Tom in the Mt. Tom Challenge from 9 AM to 11 AM. This challenge is a 1100 vertical climb to enjoy seeing the wonder of PA at the top of Mt. Tom.

OR if climbing was not on your radar (or your prefernce) you could have enjoyed a family brunch at the Penn Wells Hotel with music by Joe Callahan.

Mark your calendars to come and visit next year in February and join us for our Wellsboro Winter Celebration.
