by Loren Nowak - April 30, 2015

First Friday is back and debuts on May 1st (tomorrow) with a Cinco de Mayo theme!

The First Friday Student Art Show will be held at 17-1/2 Crafton Street, the former home of The Artisan Shoppe. Students and art teachers from both Mansfield and Wellsboro will get together to display their works. Teachers participating include James States from Mansfield, Heather Ladd and Laura Kozuhowski from Wellsboro schools and Kari Roslund, local artist and home school teacher from Wellsboro. We thank Charlie Massina for the generous use of his Crafton Street building.

Cinco de Mayo SCAVENGER HUNT with PRIZES! Fabulous prize to the winner from the Arcadia Theater. Come join the fun! Starting and ending at: The Red Skillet.

The Fifth Season—Interior Decorator Tabitha Dietrich will be at The Fifth Season for a demonstration on arranging silk florals for eye-catching displays and centerpieces. Learn tips to achieve that “designer look” yourself. Refreshments will be served.

At Pop’s Culture Shoppe (corner of Main and East Ave) join the Uno de Mayo tournament with PRIZES! Play 3 rounds any time between 5 and 7. After the score tally, prizes will be awarded at 7 PM. Also stop in and hear Author Ella Phillips read from and sign her children’s book, “Little Blessings”. May 1st is the opening night for the movie, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (playing at the Arcadia, by the way) Celebrate with Pop’s by creating your very own Avengers ID card! Go all out and show up in an Avengers costume and get a FREE Avengers HeroClix figure, too!

Stained Glass Reflections, 87 Main will hold the almost world famous Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest. They always have prizes to award (Gift Certificates for Peggy’s!!) and anyone can win! (inside if it rains) Wellsboro First Fridays thanks Peggy’s Candies and Gifts for the generous donation of prizes.

Shabby Rue, Free bags of Popcorn! The May First Friday theme is Cinco de Mayo! So kids can stop in Shabby Rue and sign up FOR FREE to win a Pinata, stuffed full with goodies!! Just register to win. (Also free adult beverages inside).

Want more live music? Try The Native Bagel where local singer/songwriter Jesse Gotshal (aka, The Road Virus) will be playing. Hear his original music for free and maybe take advantage of a dessert and coffee First Friday special while you listen.

Cafe 1905 Need a dose of even more live music? Stop in at the Cafe 1905 and hear Johanna Vogt , a young accomplished violinist play. Johanna enjoys all types of music so you’ll have to stop in to hear what she is playing tonight.

Dunham’s Department Store has always been a strong supporter of Wellsboro First Fridays. This month go up to the children’s department on the 2nd floor where they will be celebrating their Kid’s Department’s mascot, SPOT. It is SPOT’s 2nd birthday and the party will include games, activities and DRAWINGS! (If you miss it on First Friday the party goes on on Saturday, May 2nd from 10-12.

At Country Ski and Sports on Main Street stop by and hear Caleb Rutherford. Caleb is 13 and plays bluegrass banjo and won the talent show at the county fair last year. When not playing bluegrass music he likes everything outdoors. Come meet Caleb!

Michelle Hunyh, Michelle’s Studio of Tap will present a dance program on the outdoor stage at the Deane Center with music.

Remember Hula Hoops? Well…they’re back! Rosie Bloom and the Hula Hoop Club will be on the lawn and outdoor stage at the Deane Center with demonstrations and fun activities alternating with Michelle.

Every kid wants a balloon! Kids (or adults) can pick up a free balloon in front of Penn Oak Realty on Main Street. This is sponsored by Wellsboro’s own Montessori School. Information is also available.

Heather Mee will be doing free face painting for kids at the big clock on Main Street in front of Ginn & Vickery.

Local artist and potter, Lyle Bush of Pine Creek Pottery will be showing his works in front of the Penn Wells Hotel. And….only if we’re lucky, Chef Jamie Fry will also be there with some snacks to try.

Get a free chair massage from Emerge Healing Arts and Spa under the roof at Ginn & Vickery. On Main Street right in front of The Red Skillet.

Live music in front of Stained Glass Reflections by Vernal Pool. (Anne and Ciro LoPinto and friends). Come hear the hammered dulcimer, guitar, concertina and maybe even bag pipes. Always good music!

Peggy’s Candies and Gifts—Stop in and listen to our own Brena Stevens sing and play guitar.

Wild Asaph Outfitters Wanna race? The Tyoga Running Club will host treadmill races in front. This is a public participation event. Information about the club will also be available.

As First Friday starts to wind down head to the Deane Center to hear the X-Ray band as part of the Deane Center’s First Friday Concert Series. There is a small admission charge. 7:30 PM
