Census Update with Commissioner Bunn
Back in March Tioga County commissioner Roger Bunn, along with Census Complete Count Committee Chairperson, Carl Cox, addressed how not filling out the 2020 Census will affect billions of dollars of resources for our county.
How has our our country and county been responding since then?
According to Commissioner Bunn’s research, so far:
- We have a national response of 58%
- Pennsylvania response: 61.6%
- Tioga County response: 49.3%
- Borough response:
- High Borough – 72%
- Low Borough – 46%
- Township response 63.8%
- with a low of 8.3%
“We have a lot of work to do,” said Commissioner Bunn.
After COVID-19, it is apparent that the trillions of dollars are allocated to states and local communities will be needed. Some of these funds go towards schools, hospitals, infrastructure and disaster relief. Much of that is determined based on population.
“It is important that we be counted,” said Commissioner Bunn. “We can expect to lose $2,000 per person for those who don’t do the census, and that is $2,000 per year, per person for 10 years.”
If you have any questions about the 2020 Census or the dates for deadlines, you can visit 2020Census.gov. If you would like to speak with someone locally about the census, you can contact Tioga County Partnership for Community Health at 570-787-5000.
A Complete Count Committee has been developed with Mr. Carl Cox as chairperson. Keep an eye open for more video interviews in the future, well as radio ads, billboards and yard signs. The committee has 300 yard signs to give out in hopes of spreading awareness. If you would like to promote the 2020 Census with a yard sign, call 570-787-5000.
Lastly, there will be counters coming to your local place of residence. They will be following CDC guidelines and will be encouraging everyone to respond to only five questions. We hope you will take time to take the 2020 Census and be counted.
