Canton falls to South Williamsport in D4 Semifinals

by Wyatt Wood - November 13, 2023

On Friday, November 10th the Canton Warriors hosted the South Williamsport Mountaineers in the PIAA District 4 Semi-Finals. South Williamsport came out on top, 24-18.

First quarter, South lined up on their own 25 – Tadd Lusk sends a huge ball right into the hands of Dylan Scheller, the PAT is blocked by Holden Ward – South starts the game out 6-0.

Early in the second quarter, another beautiful ball from Lusk to Scheller for a 35 yard score! The kicker was blocked once again by Ward, making it 12-0.

5 minutes remaining in the half, after a huge gain off a Mountaineer throw, Zach Colton gets brought down on the five. Then Kaiser Kistner takes the inside handoff to increase South Williamsport’s lead, 18-0, after a foiled 2-point conversion attempt.

Third quarter – Canton, fresh out of the locker room, find some wiggle room and work their way into Mountaineer territory. Ben Fitch hits Ward on an outside route for a Warrior touchdown. Alexis Mcroberts’ PAT is good – getting the Warriors on the board, 18-7.

Late in the third, Warriors advance their way down the field. Then as the quarter changes, Fitch slams his way through the goal line. Ward’s inside handoff earns them the 2-point conversion, closing the score gap 18-15.

However, with just over 7 minutes remaining, South puts one more score up, yet again hitting the big ball on a fade route to Kistner. The 2 point conversion is repelled, putting South Williamsport up 24-15.

Canton never quits, fighting tooth and nail up the field once more but are forced to bring their field goal team out to put up the final points of the game from the 10 yard line. McRoberts nails one through the uprights, getting the Warriors within 6 points of the Mountaineers, 24-18.

Clock ticking down in the ball game, Canton trying everything to get up the field to close that one score gap, but on a lateral gone wrong the Warriors turn the ball over which seals the game for the Mountaineers, 24-18.

The warriors went 8-2 in the regular season and will be back again next year.
