By The Door – Understanding God’s Will

by Glen Hallead - June 6, 2023

God’s will! The question that has perplexed humankind for countless generations. Across the ages and the religious groupings the question stands, “What is…” or “How can this be God’s will?” The Stock market crashes, a family member dies young, a hurricane’s devastation results in deaths and destruction beyond comprehension; The need for a new roof when you’re busy paying medical bills, the sudden loss of a job when your company unexpectedly announces bankruptcy, the transmission suddenly goes out on your car… Is this really God’s will?

Amidst the devastation of World War II, the bombing of London resulted in the destruction of the City Temple Church. An Anglican priest named Leslie Weatherhead, was serving that church and had many folks, who had already lost their sons in the war, and who now gazed upon the remains of a once thriving church ask: how can this be be God’s will?

In response, the pastor preached a series of five sermons on God’s will, breaking it down into three facets or three ways of looking at God’s will: His ultimate will, His intentional will, and His circumstantial will. While His ultimate will is unchangeable and His intentional will is pretty clearly expressed in scripture, His circumstantial will, that which varies according to our needs for mercy and grace are the part that is a bit more difficult to discern.

Understanding God’s circumstantial will in difficult times is messy, but God IS gracious and merciful, and will accomplish His will for the good of those who love Him, because He is loving God. And He loves us too much to leave us where we are.

Want to know more? Want to experience God’s abundant grace, mercy, and peace. Jesus offers us that through a personal relationship. I’ve experienced it and walked through some dark times. I believe that that was so that I might walk with others…God’s will… His strength made perfect in my weakness. If you want to know more you know, I’ll be here by the Door…waiting to put your had to the latch that only you can open…
