Behind the Sparkle: Spinel

by Lauren Gooch - January 23, 2020

This Valentine’s Day, consider giving the gift of beautiful gray spinel jewelry from Bethany’s Jewelry and Design in Wellsboro. To show our appreciation to our Behind the Sparkle viewers, we’re giving you 20% off all in-stock gray spinel jewelry and gemstones from now until Valentine’s Day if you mention this feature.

Spinel gemstones are on the rise, coming in almost every color – violet, blue, orange, red, pink, and black. Its red variety has even been considered an alternative to Peridot for the August birthstone.

“Spinel, in my opinion, is the only gem that comes in a beautiful gray spectrum, with background colors of blue, teal and mauve that make each gem unique,” says Bethany Hawn, GIA Gemologist and owner of Bethany’s Jewelry and Design. “I love pairing gray spinel with rich gold colors such as rose and yellow, but it also looks beautiful in white metals.”

Natural Spinel has been used in Jewelry since the 1300s. Throughout history, Spinel has repeatedly been mistaken for better-known gems, such as Ruby and Sapphire. In fact, some of history’s most iconic rubies such as the 170ct Black Prince Ruby in the crown jewels is actually red spinel! It was later identified with modern technology in the late 1700s.

The necklace that Lauren is wearing in the video is a 14K yellow gold Gray Spinel necklace, available at Bethany’s Jewelry Store – 84 Main Street in Wellsboro, PA. Its regal appearance is accentuated by an intricately designed bail lined by sparkling diamonds totaling .15ctw. A 2.32ct gray spinel gemstone harbors a deep gray color and is secured by four sturdy 14K yellow gold prongs.
