Back to Basics: Light & Darkness
Can you imagine a world without light?
There’s a certain power to darkness. It dominates. It can be overwhelming. Maybe you’ve been in one of those caves where the tour guide turns out the lights and you literally can’t see your hand in front of you.
Can you imagine living in the darkness, never being able to see anything? not understanding beauty?
You’ve never seen a sunset. You’ve never seen the night sky. You’ve never seen the faces of your own children. Everything is always black. It’s hard to get around. It’s easy to stumble and harm yourself.
We live in a dark world.
Just go to most news websites and the front page shares something very dark. People dying, economies collapsing due to coronavirus – and it seems like it’s just getting worse. There are currently ten wars going on right now internationally. Did you know there are 35 million slaves in the world?
But it’s not only happening around the world. There is darkness right here in Wellsboro. Darkness happens even in our own hearts.
So how do we overcome it? How can we as a community find hope in the midst of all of this darkness?
Now imagine – that your entire life you’ve been in darkness when suddenly, there’s light! How stunning would that be; to see color for the first time, to see beauty, to see the people you love?
What would that be like? It’s like a blind person seeing for the first time!
2000 years ago Jesus came into this world and He is described in the scripture as light.
John 1:4-5 says, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
I love the image of light penetrating darkness. It lays bare everything. Darkness cannot penetrate light. Darkness is just the absence of light. But light uncovers and reveals what’s really going on for all to see. Light reveals the truth. It illuminates.
Through Jesus, God has let light shine out of darkness! Knowing Jesus is the solution to all of this darkness. He is the light of the world. We hear a lot of bad news in the world-,but the message of Jesus is the Good News – the greatest news! It’s the great news, that, by believing in the death and resurrection of Jesus, you can be forgiven of sin. And being a new life and walk in the light! And find hope in a dark world!
Someday God will right every wrong. He will dry every tear. He will bring peace to a broken world and we will be so amazed by His light. If you would like to learn more about what it means to know Jesus and walk in the light, I would love to talk to you. You can reach me by email at mike@wellsborobible.com.
