Back to Basics – Isolation

by Pastor TJ Freeman, Andrew Moore - August 19, 2020

Isolation does some crazy things to our minds sometimes. And many of use have been enduring isolation for a while now as a result of everything going on in the world at this time. Whether it be because of social distancing, political polarization or a myriad of other challenges, many of us are left still alone.

This isolation often overwhelms us with feelings of frustration, anxiety, nervousness, or loneliness. You may find yourself feeling like the subject of the famous Beatles song, “Nowhere Man.”

He’s a real nowhere man
Sitting in his nowhere land
Making all his nowhere plans for nobody
Doesn’t have a point of view
Knows not where he’s going to
Isn’t he a bit like you and me?

The truth is, you weren’t made for this. You weren’t created for isolation. You weren’t made to be disconnected or to be placed in these polarized boxes that social media or society may be trying to force you into. You were made for something much bigger – a life that matters!

You may be amazed to find what the Word of God has to say about the very circumstances you could be finding yourself in right now. The book of Romans, in the Bible, shares the truth about us – how we were made to be a part of a “body” – with each part supporting the other.

Romans chapter 12, verses 3 through 6 say,
“For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;”

God’s design is for His people as individuals, whom He has gifted, to fit into the broader group of the body of Christ so that we can compliment, encourage, and work together as a whole. No one has everything they need to flourish on their own. Because you have been given gifts to serve in this greater function, others can’t flourish without you! A healthy society works the same way, with each member of the community contributing in their own way.

If you’ve been struggling, there is hope! The loneliness, depression, anxiety and frustrations you’ve been facing become mitigated as you are refreshed by God, His word, and His people – and as you contribute in the way that God has designed you!
