Area Youth Receive Officer Training

by Rhonda Pearson, Jessica Smith - June 28, 2016

On Thursday, June 23rd, Home Page Correspondents Jessica Smith, Janessa Davis, John Vogt and Rhonda Pearson visited the Northern Tier Camp Cadet Program held at Mansfield University. The Program is for boys and girls, ages 12-13 that reside in Tioga, Potter, and Cameron Counties. They come to gain perspective about what our law enforcement officers go through on a daily basis.

During this week long camp, cadets listen to presenters from different areas of law enforcement. This year’s camp attendees experienced presentations from the FBI, a Magisterial District Judge, a Common Pleas Judge, the Game Commission, and much more.

They also participated in a Crime Scene Investigation, a Crash Scene Investigation, a Firearms Simulation, and Orienteering.

Rhonda spoke with Trooper Angela Bieber, Community Service Officer for the Northern part of Troop F and Director of the camp. Trooper Bieber spoke about the purpose of Camp Cadet and why she stays involved with the organization. “Every year it just amazes me the changes we see from day one on Monday when they come in – it’s just a gaggle. And then by Friday, graduation, it’s just amazing to see how organized they are. They’re marching together and they’re loud and proud of themselves by the end of the week.”

Janessa spoke with returning cadet Hannah Winseck. She was very grateful and excited about returning to camp? “I was excited that they picked me again,” says Hannah Winseck “I thought they wouldn’t be able to because there would be so many people coming.”

Next, Jessica spoke with Brandon Thompson about his expectations and experiences at camp. Through this program Brandon discovered how highly trained law enforcement officers are.

Later, John spoke with Trooper Matt Sweet about why he is so passionate about this program. “It’s something I really enjoy. I enjoy trying to instill knowledge into these kids. One of the things I’m in charge of is the crime scene investigation. I’m a criminal investigator so I’ve always enjoyed that aspect of the program. That’s part of the passion. I enjoy trying to teach these youths some of things we do behind the scenes.”

We would like to congratulate this years Northern Tier Camp Cadet Outstanding Cadets of the Week:
Alpha Company: Michael Lewis of Lawrenceville, Tioga County.
Bravo Company: Brandon Thompson of Roaring Branch, Tioga Co
Charlie Company: Mikenna Farabaugh of Emporium, Cameron County
Delta Company: Chelsea Hungerford of Tioga, Tioga County.
The Top Male and Female Honor Cadets were: Michael Lewis (Trooper Joseph Welsh Award) and Chelsea Hungerford (Staff Sargent Ryan Ostrom Award). They will have the opportunity to attend the Commissioner’s Honor Camp in 2017.

If you are interested in applying for next year’s camp. Look for representatives of the Norther Tier Camp Cadet Program to visit your school around March or April of next year for more information and applications.
