Ag Happenings: Corn on the Streets
The Grand Canyon FFA Chapter decorates Main Street Wellsboro for the Fall Season. Agro-Science Teacher and FFA Adviser Melanie Berndtson told Home Page Correspondent Isabella Soto that this is an excellent way for the Chapter to get involved in the community.
Each year the students of the Grand Canyon FFA Chapter look for ways to serve our community and learn different things about agriculture. One of the FFA Chapter committees focuses on citizenship. Decorating the gas lamps in Wellsboro is the leadoff activity for this committee each year. The Grand Canyon FFA as been an active Chapter since 1942. Cornstalks have been hung around Wellsboro’s famous gas lamps for decades.
In completing this project, students have the opportunity to work with the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce, who supports this event. Students can take pride in doing their part in making our Wellsboro Main Street look festive. It benefits our citizens and helps promote tourism.
Melanie also reminded us that it is not always easy for students to find meaningful ways of connecting to their community in today’s world. Dressing up Main Street for the Fall Season is one of those annual events that allow them to do just that. The students are participating in something positive that the entire town can enjoy.
Grand Canyon FFA President McKenzie Sweigart told Isabella that the event promoted bonding between FFA members which strengthens the Chapter.
FFA Member Lucus Vandergrift told Bella that the experience helps teach him how to work with others. Lucus said that he genuinely enjoyed working on the project and that it was actually therapeutic working with his FFA Chapter friends decorating for the season.
Emma Coolidge told our Home Page viewers that our FFA Chapter is very thankful to Tim Webster who donates the corn from his local farm.
Emma closed today’s broadcast with this. “It’s an honor for our local FFA chapter to be able to serve our community in this way. We hope these decorations will bring joy and beauty to our community and all who visit here. Special thanks to all of our FFA members for volunteering to help with this project as we prepare Wellsboro for a beautiful Fall kickoff.” We hope you will take a few moments to watch today’s feature and if possible, thank our Grand Canyon FFA Chapter for their hard work.
