A Community That Cares

A Community That Cares

by Janie Hilfiger - President / UPMC Cole & UPMC Wellsboro - April 16, 2020

On behalf of everyone at UPMC Cole and UPMC Wellsboro, we thank you for your kindness to our employees. The amount of support shown to our facility by members of the community means the world to us. You are the reason we chose careers in health care, and your thanks and concern give us strength and energizes us during difficult times.

As your partner in the community, UPMC is here and ready to care for our community members who may be affected by COVID-19. Our communities can be reassured that our facilities and staff are well-equipped to properly care for patients with contagious diseases, including COVID-19, without exposing other patients, staff, or visitors.

While we may not be seeing the large numbers of positive cases compared to elsewhere in the state, COVID-19 is still a critical public health threat – a threat we cannot fight without the continued support and diligence of our community members. Thank you to everyone who is still on the frontline working at our restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, and other essential businesses, for going the extra mile in sanitation and precautions to do your part in helping fight the spread of this diseases. Also, thank you to our emergency services providers – EMS, police, and firefighters – for continuing to answer the calls of our community in our time of need.

I know these are challenging times, however, the lack of widespread activity in our area means this is the best time to keep up social distancing in order to have the greatest impact and “flatten the curve.” By taking these steps, we can still mitigate the impact of this virus on our region and maintain our hospitals’ ability to care for those who may become critically ill.

The people I work with at UPMC, especially those involved in patient care and the support of patient care, are making tremendous personal sacrifices, as are their families. This is what caregivers do. I thank each one, and I know the UPMC leaders I work with are thankful and honored to work with such a caring and dedicated team.

The community response continues to be extraordinary and heart-warming. Hundreds of caring people and organizations have offered help or supplies. Some offer to bring food for our hard-working staff, while others are offering kind notes and recognitions on our lawns, sidewalks, and through notes on social media. We are grateful for the outpouring of support – which is no surprise from the good people and good neighbors in all the communities that we serve in northcentral Pennsylvania.
