7th Annual Mini Relay-For-Life
On Thursday May 28th, Rock L. Butler Middle School held their 7th Annual Mini Relay for Life. Home Page spoke with 5th grade Reading and Science teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Outman who has helped to guide and organize the event for the last six years.
The carnival-esque benefit event was run by the students (from 5th thru 8th grades.) The game ideas and prizes were suggested and envisioned by the students. Many people and businesses in the community were also involved by volunteering their time, food and monetary donations to help make the event a success. Students raised money by taking home sponsor sheets and pre-purchasing tickets for the different games. Parents donated a variety of food and drinks as well.
In addition to the middle school, many 4th graders from Don Gill Elementary came to participate in the event. Not only did the event help raise money for cancer research, but it also “helps acclimate the 4th graders to middle school life so they’re not so nervous and have the opportunity to meet some of the teachers and see the school a little bit,” said Mrs. Outman.
There were lots of games to choose from, including a dunking booth, sponge toss, lollipop toss, face painting. The kids’ creativity shown no only in the variety of games, but also the names of the activities, many of which would reference the fight against cancer. (For example: A bowling game titled “Strike Out Cancer,” a golf game titled “Put Cancer Down a Hole,” and a balloon game were kids would stomp on a balloon to pop it, titled “Stomp Out Cancer.”) The kids seemed to be aware that even in all the fun and excitement they were also making a difference by helping to support and raise money for cancer research.
A total of $3,522.00 was raised in support of the fight against cancer.
Mrs. Outman and all involved would like to thank the following:
