BLOSSBURG AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION PURCHASES LUCAS DEVICE THANKS TO COMMUNITY DONATIONS

by Annie Brooks - February 17, 2023

BLOSSBURG, PA (February 2023) – The Blossburg Ambulance Association was recently able to purchase two Lucas Devices through generous donations from Ward Manufacturing, the Ward Foundation, Tri-County Rural Electric and the Williamson Road Foundation.

A Lucas Device is a portable, easy-to-use device that delivers automated, consistent chest compressions to victims in cardiac arrest.

‘I had never heard of a Lucas Device until we received this request from the Ambulance Association,’ stated Blossburg Mayor, Shane Nickerson. ‘After learning about it and what it does and how it works like an extra set of hands, it was a no brainer for me as to how important this piece of equipment is.’

The device is designed to perform high-quality CPR to patients and allow first responders to continue to focus on other aspects of patient care without having to continuously perform CPR.

‘For our department this device gives us a huge advantage when it comes to patient care,’ stated Ambulance President Fred Yungwirth. ‘Our department covers such a large area that oftentimes it takes us at least 25 minutes just to get to the hospital, not including the time we spend administering treatment at the scene. So, having a device that can take over for a person is a huge asset.’

‘The great thing about Blossburg is that we have a great group of volunteers throughout the community,’ Nickerson continued. ‘They support each other instead of competing against each other. Relationships are so important – especially in today’s society where every volunteer organization is short staffed.’
These devices will be stored on ambulances housed in both Blossburg Borough and Liberty Borough.
