An early lead by the Wellsboro Softball team faded in the bottom of the 3rd inning as rival North Penn-Liberty 10-runned the Lady Hornets, 14-4, on Friday, April 29.

After a scoreless 1st inning Wellsboro scored the game’s first runs in the top of the 2nd. Abbye Cavanaugh doubled to center to score Emma Coolidge, who led off with a base hit. The next at bat Abby Owlett grounded out to second base to score Madaline Bordas.

Wellsboro held the lead until the bottom of the 3rd when the Lady Mounties scored 4 times to take the lead. Liberty tied the game up on a hit by Megan Spohn to score McKenzie Tice and Saige Lehman then took the lead on a Wellsboro error and a sac bunt by McKenna Lightner to score Nikki Kiscadden, making it 4-2.

Wellsboro cut the lead to 4-3 in the top half of the 3rd on a solo home run by Bordas but the Lady Mounties scored 5 more runs on hits by Spohn, Addie Smith, and Lightner to make it 9-3. Two more runs scored in the bottom of the 5th by the Lady Mounties to push the lead to 11-3. A Coolidge home run made it 11-4 in the top of the 6th but the Lady Mounties scored three more times in the bottom half of the inning to score the win.

McKenzie Tice went 4-for-5 and scored 4 runs to lead the Lady Mounties at the plate. Smith was 2-for-5, Saige Lehman was 2-for-3, and Lightner, Alexia Kshir, Marissa Griess, and Kiscadden added the remainder of Liberty’s 12 hits. Tice had 2 extra base hits (double and a triple). Smith pitched all 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with a walk and 11 strikeouts.

The Lady Hornets had 5 hits on the afternoon, two each by Bordas and Coolidge, and one by Cavanaugh. Junior Rylie Boyce and freshman Alexandra Urena split time in the circle. Urena started, and was credited for the loss, giving up 6 runs (4 earned) on 4 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in 3 innings. Boyce pitched the remaining 2 & 2/3 innings, allowing 8 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits with 4 walks.

The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 4-10 (2-8 NTL Large School Division) while Liberty improves to 8-4 (7-4 NTL Large School Division).
