Yolie Canales (shown) is preparing 4.5-inch deep square black plastic flower pots with moisturized soil in which Golden Afternoons participants will each plant a petunia plug to grow at home.

During the free Golden Afternoons program at 1 p.m. this coming Tuesday, April 12 in the Deane Center lobby at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro, the men and women attending will each plant one petunia plug in a 4.5-inch square black plastic flowerpot and take it home.

Anyone who is 55 years of age or older is welcome to participate. Free refreshments will be provided, including cookies and coffee or tea.

Yolie Canales of Wellsboro is donating the flowerpots and preparing them with soil and water in advance. For 15 years, she and her husband ran Tioga Nursery growing plants and flowers as a business in greenhouses on their property in Charleston Township along Route 6, just outside of Wellsboro.

Canales will talk about how much to water and fertilize a petunia plug as it grows and when to replant the flowers in an outdoor pot or hanging basket as well as other gardening tips.

There will be a limited supply of four varieties of petunias. All of them are fast growing, profuse bloomers and self-cleaning. They include: Supertunia® Vista Silverberry Petunia which has a white flower with pink veins; Supertunia® Trailing Blue Veined Petunia which has a pink flower with blue veins; Surfinia® Heavenly Blue, a Petunia hybrid with blue flowers; and Supertunia Vista® Paradise, which has hot pink flowers.

The petunia plugs are from Leister Sunny Acres on Route 287 in Delmar Township, near Wellsboro.
