Over one hundred and five years ago, a beautiful Wellsboro home became The Green Free Library. And today, on Wellsboro Home Page, we get to take a fabulous tour as Home Page Vice President Sara Vogt visits with Librarian Leslie Wishard.

The Green Free Library board works hard to maintain the building and view themselves as caretakers of this unique part of historic Wellsboro. The Green Free Library is an independent library but part of a Potter-Tioga library system. The Green Free Library is the most extensive library in the system, with a total of eleven libraries in the two-county system. They all take pride in joining together to provide services throughout our communities.

The Green Free Library is not only historical; it is beautiful. Today’s broadcast tour explores some of the home’s original layout and how each room became an essential part of the library. The main room is mainly for adults with an abundance of non-fiction and fiction materials. You will enjoy the comfy chairs and the newly-restored window, which brings plenty of light into the area.

The computer area is practical and efficient. The children’s area, which is part of the building’s historical area, was originally the family room. The Robins Room was named after Mary B. Robinson, the woman who owned the home. The room holds books and materials for middle school students up through young adults.

You will also see a portrait of Charles S. Green of Roaring Branch in the library who was a wealthy lumberman. He bequeaths $50,000 for the incorporation of The Green Free Library in Wellsboro. He also gave money for another community to have a library. Do you know where the other Green Free Library is established? Canton too would have a library, simply called Green Free Library of Canton.

The Green Free Library in Wellsboro is open seven days a week. Monday through Thursday, they are open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Friday through Sunday, they are open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. They also have a curbside service. Just give them a call and let them know what books, magazines, movies, audiobooks, or DVDs you want and they will get them ready and take them out to your car for pick-up.
