Questioning Life – What should we make of suffering?

by Pastor Mike Birbeck - August 5, 2021

Suffering is incidental to life. However, how we respond to suffering is largely up to us. Some deal with suffering by trying to avoid its effect, thus suppressing it in unhealthy ways. Others, like those in some ancient cultures and some today, seek after pain. Christ enters our suffering and redeems it. He allows us to soberly face suffering, instead of suppressing it. He also gives us the strength to endure it and carry us through it.

The Apostle Peter said, “For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God (1 Pet 2:19).” He then went on to say, “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; ‘by his wounds you have been healed (1 Pet 2:24).’” Come to Jesus and be healed.
