National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day
There are 30.2 million small businesses in the United States, according to the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Office of Advocacy. Small businesses comprise 99.9 percent of all U.S. businesses. And every year, March 29 marks National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the family-owned businesses that make American communities diverse and vibrant. As small and independently owned businesses, mom-and-pop shops, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses represent their local economies’ building blocks. They create jobs, reinvest in their communities, and support local initiatives.
Rick and Margie Segal started National Mom and Pop Business Day in honor of couples like his parents, whose successful hat shop opened in 1939 and grew into a 10,000 square feet and $2 million clothing store. National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day honors the people behind many of the country’s small businesses. To celebrate their hard work, visit a family-owned business in your community and consider what value it adds to the place you live.
On this broadcast, Home Page Vice-President Sara Vogt speaks with Anja Stam, Pop’s Culture Shoppe’s business owner, about National Mom and Pop Business Day. Anja shared that the day is this coming Monday, March 29.
She shared her gratefulness for those who chose to shop at Pop’s during this past year during COVID19. During this time, the stores were closed to in-house traffic and re-opened with limited occupancy. Thankfully, many shopped online, which gave their store some of the revenue they needed to stay open while gladly serving our community.
Anja also mentioned the other businesses in town that have stayed open and chose to offer their goods and services online or by having their customers ordering over the phone and then coming to pick up their merchandise.
Come out to celebrate National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day this coming Monday, the 29th, to Pop’s for some delicious cookies bought from another local business, the Native Bagel.
We would also encourage everyone to choose one of their favorite small local shops and stop in to tell the owners that you appreciate what they do for the community.
At the beginning of this broadcast, Rob Hilfiger at Garrisons Clothing assisted Home Page videographer/editor Ethan Chabala capture the hats and suit jacket. Rob also let us know that there are many suit jackets on sale in the store.
