The Squirrel Whisperer
With the arrival of spring and warmer weather, it’s time again to enjoy some outdoor activities. Many individuals in Tioga County enjoy exploring wildlife, especially bird watching, but have you ever thought about squirrel watching? Today, we introduce to our viewers Mary Krupa, the famous Penn State Squirrel Girl, who has befriended these squirrels to uplift the spirits of others.
The Sandusky Scandal inspired Mary to interact with these squirrels, in order to bring some laughter to the area at a time the community needed it most. Amazingly, the squirrels would come to her call, allow her to hold or pet them, and even try to give her a kiss. On her grandmother’s birthday, Mary had the idea to make a hat for the squirrels and take a picture to use as a birthday card. The photo was a hit, and it inspired her to create a Facebook page where she would post photos of the squirrels in hats she makes to brighten someone’s day.
The page now has over 14,000 followers, and the squirrels have been featured on magazines and newspapers worldwide. However, for Mary, it is not about the fame, but instead she hopes to make others smile by sending happy news their way.
