Tigers Win District Title Game!

by Brady Connolly - March 3, 2017

The North-Penn Mansfield Tigers faced off against Northeast Bradford at Decker Gymnasium in the PIAA District IV Class AA championship game. The Tigers claimed the victory and brought the hardware home to North-Penn Mansfield High School.

The Tigers scored in a flash off the opening tip, Shane Kelly retrieved the tip-off and passed to a cutting Konnor Manikowski for a layup. As the North-Penn Mansfield defense settled in for its first possession, it became clear that Northeast Bradford was going to employ a unique offensive strategy. Northeast spread the floor and went into a delay set offense, looking for nothing short of an open layup. Northeast was able to take the air out of the ball, running more than 4 minutes off the clock on a single possession. The Tigers held a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, despite a lack of offensive possessions.

The second quarter saw more of the same, as Northeast continued to try and frustrate the Tigers by making them play for extended periods of time on the defensive end of the floor. But the Tigers remained patient, not gambling on defense and denying the Panthers the open layups they coveted. North-Penn Mansfield was able to capitalize on their offensive possessions, Nick Kasper and Jayden Andrews both knocked down triples in the period, and Brock Burleigh scored inside, sending the Tigers into the locker room with a 14-2 lead.

North-Penn Mansfield came out for the third quarter ready to put the game away, and they did just that. Brock Burleigh scored on a driving layup to get the Tigers started. Nick Kasper followed that up with another three-pointer. And Shane Kelly finished off the scoring surge with a mid range jumper and a put back layup. North-Penn Mansfield ran out to a 29-5 lead at the close of the third quarter.

Northeast Bradford opened their offense up in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers had already done the necessary damage. North-Penn Mansfield was able to empty their bench and cruise to the PIAA District IV Class AA championship. After the game the Tigers were presented with their championship plaque, as well as there district medals. The team posed for pictures with their new hardware, and enjoyed the moment with their coaches, families, and fans.
North-Penn Mansfield will enjoy their District 4 triumph, but only briefly as they now set their sights on the state tournament. They hope to make a run deep into the tournament, and the first step towards that goal will be winning their next match up against the third place team from District 9.
