EMERGENCY 101 – FIREWORKS SAFETY TIPS
The fourth of July is both a celebration of American history as well as an opportunity to spend time with our loved ones and fellow community members. But being proud to be an American doesn’t mean that we should put those loved ones at risk. It’s important to think of safety FIRST this summer during our celebrations rather than put ourselves in harms way.
Please be aware of and follow these tips to enjoy fireworks safely. If fireworks are legal in your community and are a part of your celebration:
1. Please be sure to store and use them safely.
2. Keep kids and pets away from fireworks at all times.
3. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and only use fireworks as they were intended.
4. Fireworks should only ever be used outdoors and away from structures, automobiles, or around very dry vegetation.
5. Keep spectators at a safe distance.
6. NEVER attempt to relight “dud” fireworks. Instead, wait 20 minutes and then soak them in a bucket of water prior to disposal.

FOR THE LOVE OF FOOD – IMPROVED PICNIC!
We are now in picnic season! I always struggle with bringing a dish to pass. I like bringing a veggie plater because it is a healthy option, but it looks so boring!
Recently I discovered some new ways to spice up the presentation. I am going to share with you how to make the platter of veggies look a little more fun and appetizing! First, take a rinsed cucumber and cut it in half. Slice a part of one of the halves into about 8 very thin slices. Layer the slices in a line with each slice covering half of the previous slice. Roll the slices from one end to the next and cut the roll in half. Your end product should resemble a rose!

MAKING THE CUT – MATT REESE
There are over 480 thousand high school baseball players in the United States. Of those, only 7% participate at the collegiate level. Matthew Reese is a 2013 graduate of Wellsboro who is currently attending Wilkes University. We got to speak with him on this edition of Making the Cut.
Reese participated in many sports throughout high school. During his freshman year he was a part of a baseball squad that made a run to the district championship game. “Freshman year we had a magical run in baseball and I think that’s kind of where it all started to give me a little confidence for other sports.” He was also a part of a basketball team that won 3 NTL titles and a district runner-up his senior year.
