A week of Wellsboro Home Page feature highlights!

by Home Page Staff - April 8-9, 2017

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

MU Beat – Spring Break Service
“Character, scholarship, culture, and service are the core values of the Mansfield University Creed,” explains Mansfield University President, Fran Hendricks. “In this edition of the Mansfield Beat, we are going to focus on service. MU students, staff, and faculty completed more than 13,000 hours of community service last year. Our goal is to top that number this year . . . Our service efforts extend beyond Mansfield—and even Pennsylvania. As Terry Day and his guests will explain, our service efforts reach from coast to coast.”

Terry Day speaks with Frank Crofchick, Interim Dean of Students, about Mansfield University students who opted out of the traditional spring break beach party, and instead chose to serve. Crofchick explains that there were two groups of students—one group that traveled to the San Francisco area to become involved with at-risk youth and the environment; and another group that went to New York City where they focused on poverty issues and homelessness.

Step Outdoors – The Origin Story
Today, we speak with Tim Morey and Pete Herres, co-founders of Step Outdoors, which is a group of clubs, individuals, organizations and public agencies working together to bring opportunities and activities to area residents and visitors.

“It’s about working together,” explains Morey.

The three main partners involved in Step Outdoors are the state parks, Wellsboro Parks & Recreation and the Army Corps of Engineers. “And then,” adds Morey, “There are so many other organizations and members that are constantly evolving and changing as they see value and benefit; and they have different things to bring to the table and share.”

Prevent Child Abuse in Tioga County
To many of us, Social Work is an illusive thing. After all, there are so many facets to society, where would one even begin! However, after an interview with key leaders of the Family Services Department, it is clear that their role is not only distinct, but vital for Tioga County. Michele Rigalbuto and Christa Hilfiger shared their specific duties as superiors within Family Services, as well as, some upcoming events we all should know about.

Dunham’s Corner – Myths Debunked
Dunham’s most popular sale is going on now through April 17.
Even though customers love saving money, and savvy Dunham’s shoppers are experts at navigating this promotion, there are some misconceptions about this sale.

1. I don’t live here.
While we are sorry you can’t enjoy living in our beautiful area, that doesn’t mean that you cannot enjoy our Mystery Bonus Sale! You’ll just need to spend your bucks before you end your stay in Wellsboro.

2. I don’t really need anything else – I’m all shopped out.
Our Bonus Bucks can be used on any purchase in the Department Store BIG or small! Who can’t use another pair of socks, a birthday card, a pair of shoes, or really anything else in our store.

3. There are too many stairs to traverse.
There are many stairs to our office. However, we do have an elevator that can cut a larger part of those stairs out of your journey.

Ag Happenings – Easter Animals
Bunnies, ducklings, and chicks – oh my! These animals make up some of the most popular gifts at Easter time for young children. They are cute, cuddly, and fluffy – just want a child wants. Sometimes parents get in over their head with these gifts, not realizing that they can grow and mature quickly and they live a really long time. Children can grow bored of this new pet quickly when it is not as cute anymore if they are not invested and committed in this animal. These animals need veterinary care, housing, and proper feed throughout their lives. Rabbits are the third most commonly surrendered pet at animal shelters across the country behind cats and dogs.
