HORNETS SHUTOUT CANTON, 46-0
The Wellsboro Varsity Football team started the 2016 season on a positive note by shutting out Canton 46-0 on Friday, August 26.

“You’ll definitely take a win in the first game of the year,” head coach Matt Hildebrand said. “We had a lot of first-game mistakes out there. I think we had over 100 yards in penalties in the first half so I’m not really pleased with that. You go into halftime and we got on them a little bit to improve our focus. If we clean up those things we can be even better.”
Wellsboro racked up 398 of total offense on the night, compared to Canton’s 34 yards. Henry went 6-for-11 for 91 yards passing with a touchdown and rushed for a game-high 113 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.
“We came out together but it was a little sloppy and not what we wanted but a win is a win,” Henry said.

LAUREL HEALTH – BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING
Did you know that August is national breastfeeding awareness month?

Many organizations answered the 2011 national call to “participate in a society-wide approach to support mothers and babies who are breastfeeding.” That quote is taken from The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding publication.
That call to action is now in its seventh year and organization’s like the national Centers for Disease Control’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity “are committed to increasing breastfeeding rates throughout the United States and to promoting and supporting optimal breastfeeding practices toward the ultimate goal of improving the public’s health”.

MU PSYCH CENTRAL – TECH ADDICTION PT. 2
The brain is a complex organ in our bodies that underlies all of our thoughts, behaviors, and feelings. It holds the answer to why we become addicted or overly dependent to our cell phones. Although the answer is much more complicated than what this feature and article are presenting, understanding the basics of our brain’s inner-workings is important to developing a better idea as to how this all works. Dopamine is one of over 100 neurotransmitters, or chemical impulses, that directs our body to respond in some way. It plays a role in our ability to move, remember, experience pleasure, behave a certain way, think, hold our attention, sleep, control mood, and learn. Specifically related to behavior addictions, dopamine mediates pleasure in the brain. It’s released when we experience satisfaction in something and fuels our pleasure-seeking drives.

THE GRAND “WELCOME BACK!”
The opening day of the school year offers the joy of new beginnings. Anticipation builds as students, parents and teachers get ready for the school doors to open. Faculty and staff begin preparing for each new school year by readying the school, the rooms, and the lessons. This year Principal Kreger thought it would be nice to kick off the year with a “sting” of excitement.

The Wellsboro High School teachers lined the entrance street into the school. They donned fun hats, gave high fives, and shook pom poms as the students and buses poured into the building’s entrance way. Even the bus drivers honked their horns in celebration. This enthusiastic welcome, on the first day back to school, reminds us all that school and the privilege to learn is worth celebrating.

VOLLEYBALL SEASON PREVIEW 2016
The 2016 volleyball season is less than a week away, and the Wellsboro Lady Hornets are ready to defend their 2015 District IV crown.

The Lady Hornets won their second District IV championship in 4 years last year, but lost 5 seniors to graduation in the spring. While that class will be difficult to replace, Coach Zuchowski had multiple underclassmen on last year’s Varsity squad that saw lots of playing time down the stretch in important games.

The Lady Hornets finished 2nd in the NTL Large School Division standings behind Towanda last year. While the Hornets are looking to be at the top of their District, they must also keep pace with Towanda if they want to win their first league championship since 1991-92.
