Wellsboro senior Parker Jones announced he will continue his football career this fall at Division III Lycoming College on Monday, May 1.

Jones was a member of the Hornets for just two years after transferring back from Canton after his sophomore year, but he immediately impacted the team. During Jones’ time at Wellsboro, he helped lead the Hornets to the school’s first-ever District IV championship while compiling 828 yards and 12 touchdowns on 59 receptions and racking up 179 tackles, 96 of them this past season, and tying Rob Kreger’s record of 14 career sacks.

“I’m pretty excited to take things to the next level,” Jones said. “Playing with different people and at two different high schools was a big factor (in helping me get ready).”

Jones was between Lycoming and Frostburg State University, also a Division III school in Maryland, but chose Lycoming late last week.

“A lot of my good friends and coaches of mine have gone there, and it’s close for family.”

“I’m very proud of Parker and his hard work,” said Wellsboro head coach Matt Hildebrand. “He’s battled back from some injuries in his career, both here and when he was at a previous school. He’s been a relentless worker for us, we’ve won a lot of games because of what he’s done on the field.”

Because of his size Jones was a constant match up problem for area teams on both sides on the ball.

“He has attributes that you can’t coach, and I was fortunate enough to be able to coach him,” Hildebrand continued. “He was a huge asset for our game planning every week. He’s going to be surely missed as we move on to next year. I definitely think he can go in and make an impact, he’s going to have to continue the same work ethic but I think he can play early for them and I know they’re really excited to have him.”
