Behind the Sparkle – Emerald

Bethany shares the beauty behind May’s birthstone

by Bethany Hawn - May 11, 2017

Nothing compares to the vibrant bluish-green color of an emerald. It is the most famous of the Beryl Family and one of the most popular colored stones. The emerald is classified as a TYPE 3 stone, which means it is almost always included. (aAn inclusion is a characteristic enclosed within a gemstone, or reaching its surface from the interior.) But what Bethany loves about this is that emeralds can have what is called a “three phase inclusion (included crystal – liquid- and a gas.)”

“I can spend hours looking through my microscope to find these fascinating inclusions,” says Bethany. “Because sometimes that little gas bubble can move within the liquid.”

Because emeralds are soft and often full of inclusions they are routinely fractured filled with oils or resin.

Emeralds require a little more tender love and care. They should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic machine and, when not worn, kept in a jewelry box where they wont be scratched by other jewelry. Always use a gentle cleaner and soft bristled brush to clean your jewelry and take it to your local jeweler for routine inspections.

Emeralds have been treasured since 330BC and were a favorite of Cleopatra. They would be an exquisite addition to any jewelry collection.
