You Could Be Best Dressed!

Preparations begin for Dicken's Best Dressed Contest!

by Sara Vogt - September 15, 2017

On this broadcast feature Sky DeBockler, our 2016 winner of the Best Dressed Contest, shares why she enjoys the history and fashion of the 1800’s. Sky attends high school locally. She has been attending Dickens Festivals since she was a young girl and decided this past year to create her Victorian masterpiece. It took her and her aunt, Ray DeBlockler, three months to work on the outfit together which began by first visiting local thrift stores and searching the internet. They finally decided on a design.

Sky wanted it to have brilliant colors with an elegance slant. As you view today’s program, you’ll agree she succeeded. Sky also desired that her outfit be a design that people would enjoy seeing and inspire others to create something special for themselves. Dickens is always more fun and exciting when you come dressed for the occasion in time-period clothing.

When asked how she felt when she won the contest she replied, “ I was surprised, I honestly didn’t even know about the competition until that morning. I entered on a whim. I enjoy dressing up, and I figured maybe people would enjoy me in it.” Upon winning the contest, she was presented a basket filled with gifts from area merchants and a hat from Christine A. Moore Millinery. Again she expressed joy and gratitude concerning her gifts, especially the hat, “Beautiful, I love it. Not only does it match my dress but it is a perfect design, I love it.” Sky will be leading the first stroll on December 2nd at 10:00 AM. The second stroll with our new winner begins at 2:00 PM. You do not need to enter the contest to participate in the strolls down Main Street. All are welcome to join the fun and festivities of Dickens of a Christmas.

To sign up for the Dickens of a Christmas Best Dressed Contest stop by the Deane Center Lobby on Saturday, December 2nd. Registration begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 12:30 PM. Then at 1:00 PM dressed in your finest Dickens attire meet at the outdoor performance space of the Deane Center located at the corner of Main Street and Central Avenue. In the event of challenging weather, the event will be moved inside the Deane Center.

The Home Page Network is delighted to sponsor The Dickens of a Christmas Best Dressed Contest again this year. Home Page’s John Vogt will be the master of ceremonies while Christine Moore will be giving dress period commentary. Our panel of esteemed judges will have the daunting task of selecting The Best Dressed for Dickens 2017 in record time! The winner will receive a gift basket (filled with over $1,000.00 worth of prizes) from Wellsboro’s local merchants which includes a beautiful custom-made hat from Christine A. Moore Millinery of New York City.

Then at approximately 2:00 PM the winner will lead the participants and everyone else down Main Street for a fabulous Dickens stroll! Don’t miss the fun! For more information about the Best Dressed Contest, you can call The Home Page Network at 570-948-9181.

You can also preregister for the Best Dressed Contest by emailing sara@thehomepagenetwork.com with your name and the best way to contact you.

We hope you will join us this year in Wellsboro, PA for Dickens of a Christmas all dressed up in time-period clothing! See you there!

Sounds like lots of fun but need some encouragement? Attend Larry and Barbara Biddison’s workshop on November 1st at the Penn Wells Hotel in Wellsboro at 6:00 PM

HISTORY:
The Best Dressed Contest was inspired by Christine A. Moore of Christine A Moore Millinery. Christine states, “All over the country I do events where people wear hats, and they have a best-dressed contest. I realized that this event would be right for that, it would be a perfect venue and a well-attended event. I figured it would add to more of the fun and excitement,” she explained.

Of course being a hat designer her attention to detail starts with the hats. She is encouraging those who want to design an eye catching outfit this year, to begin with, a striking time-period hat. The Dickens of a Christmas time-period for hats lands on the year 1843 or the Empire period. There are many styles to choose from depending on the look you think you would enjoy from elegant to peasant.

If you google Empire period hats, many styles will appear. Christine encourages those who plan on making or purchasing their clothes for Dickens to consider warm material to make the outfit more enjoyable to wear during the winter season.

We encourage you to stop in for a visit at Christine’s booth located inside the Deane Center. There will be plenty of incredible hats.
