Wyalusing Clinches Win Over Wellsboro In Final Minutes

by Wyatt Wood - September 9, 2024

Last Thursday, September 5th, the Wellsboro Hornets hosted the Wyalusing Rams in a defensive showdown. Both teams demonstrated their defensive prowess from the opening kickoff. On Wyalusing’s first drive, they worked their way to the 50. Then, on 2nd and 8, the Hornets Cole Knapp blitzed, hitting the hole hard for the sack, for a loss of 5.

Then, a few plays later, Hornet Ryder Bowen penetrated the line, ran down the quarterback, forcing a turnover on downs. Both defenses held resolute to the end of the quarter.

Right before halftime the Rams went to the air on 3rd and 16. It was a deep ball into double coverage, however, the Hornets’ Aiden Carson intercepted it. Two plays later, Wyalusing’s secondary took notes with their own interception. Going into the locker room at halftime, the score remained 0-0.

During halftime, Wellsboro recognized three new inductees into the Wellsboro Sports Hall of Fame, including Elizabeth (Nicodemus) Hoover, Dr. Andy Sayre and Ted Zuchowski.

Wellsboro’s defense held Wyalusing to 0 passing yards on the night.

In the third quarter, Wyalusing dropped back to pass – then Hornet Jayden Dumm read the pass and tipped it to Reed Richardson who took it to the red zone. A few plays later the Wyalusing Rams – blockade couldn’t be broken – so the Hornets attempted a field goal. The kick was no good, keeping the game a stalemate with 5:21 left in the third.

To start the 4th quarter Wellsboro fought their way up the field again where they were forced to make another field goal attempt. A pair of stampeding Rams broke through to block it.

Finally, Wyalusing broke the stalemate with 3 and half minutes left in the game. Dylan Johns found a gap to the open field for a Ram touchdown. Wellsboro prevented the two-point conversion, making the score 6-0, Rams.

On the following kickoff return, Wyalusing forced a fumble – setting up Dylan John’s second touchdown. He cut inside and found the open field again – securing the Rams victory, 13-0.

Wellsboro will be back in action on the road against Towanda this Friday.
