WPD & Shallcross Hold Identity Theft Awareness Event
On Monday, October 18, Chief of Police for the Wellsboro Police Department Jim Bodine invited David Shallcross (Director of Senior Protection from the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General) to hold a presentation titled: “Identity Theft: What You Need To Know.”
During the presentation Shallcross defined identity theft and shed light on many scams and other techniques used to prey on the unsuspecting or careless.
“We wanted to educate the community about identity theft and scams that are affecting this area,” said Chief Bodine.
Identity theft and fraud in 2020 was reported by over 4.8 million consumers, at an estimated loss of over $3.3 billion.
“Pennsylvania ranked 29th in identity theft reports across the nation,” said Shallcross. “And unfortunately we’re 6th for cybercrimes being reported. So we are targeted, folks.”
You can report scams to the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General by email via scams@attorneygeneral.gov or call 1 (800) 441-2555.
