Women’s Self Defense Training

Don't wait - participate!

by Kristine Worthington - August 15, 2017

Because our moms, daughters, and friends are valuable in our lives, they need to be prepared for emergency situations. Staying alert to our surroundings might not be enough, sometimes violent situations arrive unannounced. Therefore, taking time to participate in self-defense training is important. By encouraging women to take self-defense training, those we love will be empowered to protect themselves.

Fortunately, there are resources available here in our community to address this need. Vince Nance, who has an extensive background in self-defense training, cares passionately about providing women’s self-defense workshops. He recognizes that there is a societal reality of violence that we cannot ignore. Although we would like to believe that violence is not present in our neighborhoods, evidence indicates that the problem is here. According to The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV), “There are 50 rape crisis centers in Pennsylvania that serve more than 30,000 victims each year. There are also 60 domestic violence centers that serve nearly 90,000 victims yearly.”

In an effort to address this very real problem, Vince offers monthly events for women of all ages and fitness levels. During a training session, the group not only gains real skills, but also has fun in the safe environment of an all-woman training group. Having participated in a couple of these events, I can confirm that, in an hour or two of training, participants have practiced real usable techniques that could make a difference in an attack situation.

The ultimate goal is to be proactive and decrease the chance that an attack could occur. Remember to be aware of your surroundings, and trust your own instincts. If you sense there is a threat don’t ignore the problem. Acts of violence are not predictable. You want to get training before a violent event occurs. Vince offered this analogy, waiting until you’re in the midst of a car accident to put on your seatbelt is not going to be effective. You want to have your seatbelt on before-hand. Be ready before the danger is at hand. By attending a woman’s self-defense class you can mentally and physically prepare and improve your chance of escape. Make this a priority now. Be prepared!

Stop into Peggy’s Candies to sign up for the upcoming class at the Deane Center on August 26th.
