Wildcats Outrun the Warriors

by Wyatt Wood - September 9, 2024

Saturday, September 7th, the Canton Warriors hosted the Athens Wildcats. A mostly offensive nail biter of a game, the Warriors were bested in the end, 48-42. Let’s get into the highlights.

The Wildcats got ahead early putting up 14 points in the first quarter. Then in the second, the Warriors found their way over the goal line when Bailey Gardner takes the handoff and rumbles his way to the end zone. Wildcats still up 14-6.

Next, Warriors lined up on the 25 give the outside handoff to Gardner again finding the gap and scoring. The PAT is good, Warriors trailing by 1; 14-13.

The Warriors then get ahead as Ben Fitch calls his own number on the gaol line. The kick is good, 20-14.

The Wildcats take the lead back after recovering a fumble inside the Warriors 10, up by 1 again 21-20 – Wildcats, going into the locker room for halftime.

Third quarter- first and goal from the 6; Gardner with his third rushing touchdown of the night and a 2 point conversion grasping at the lead 28-21.

The Wildcats fire back going to the air Conner Davidson to Keegan Congdon. The PAT is no good tying up the score 28-28 nearing the end of the third.

Next, Ben Fitch calls his own number and burns the outside. PAT is good, 35-28

Then the goal line defense from the Warriors is broken as Davidson smashes through. The kick is good, 35 all.

The Warriors score again at the begging of the fourth quarter with an outside screen to Aydin Holcomb again ahead 42-35.

Then the Wildcats relied on their passing game to tie up the score 42-42.

Athens progresses their way up the field and in another goal line defense, the Wildcats find their way through the line putting them up 48-42. The Warriors prevented the PAT making it only a 6 point lead.

The Canton Warriors had one last shot with a Hail Mary. With just two seconds left on the clock, Fitch sends the long ball and it’s broken up by the Wildcats, final score 48-42.

This Friday, the Canton Warriors are on the road headed to Island Park to face the North Penn Mansfield Panthers.
