Who Was Harry Gates?

by Lucas Drever - Friday, July 19 2024

This past year, the Canton Chapter of the FFA investigated their roots by working to answer some long-standing questions: who was Harry Gates, and why was the chapter originally named after him; when and why did the name change to the Canton FFA; why did the chapter disappear in the late 1990s and what happened to the artifacts thereafter?
In my final year as a Canton FFA member and president, I decided to take the initiative and spend the time to dig up the past. Almost exactly a year after the project really got going, I had the opportunity to partake in this interview and declare that the case is closed as I answer the aforementioned questions.
Many surprising truths were uncovered and many people were brought together to complete the story. The Canton FFA thanks everyone who had a hand in the project and is very grateful to have had all of the community interest and support. As I have gone through our chapter’s past, I have found that people who have had an impact on our chapter, such as Harry Gates, embody the principles of the FFA Creed and are figures to be looked up to.
I am very fortunate to be able to leave a detailed chronology for the future members of this chapter. There may be a few loose ends that still need to be worked over, but we finally have a solid story to tell the world about and be proud of.
