White Team Claims Third Straight Win in Devin K. Webster Memorial Alumni Soccer Game
The Wellsboro community and generations of Hornet soccer alumni came together Saturday, Aug. 1, to honor the life and legacy of Devin Webster during the third annual Devin K. Webster Memorial Alumni Soccer Game.
Alumni players were divided by graduation year, with even-numbered classes wearing green and odd-numbered classes taking the field in white. After the Webster family welcomed players and spectators and thanked everyone for their continued support, the annual tradition got underway.
The White team struck first just minutes into the match when Josiah Hill found the back of the net with a powerful left-footed shot to the near post for a 1-0 lead.
Green answered soon after as Gabe Leach delivered a cross to Jonathan Carl, who finished the chance to even the match at 1-1.
With 16 minutes remaining in the opening half, Austin Haskins chipped the ball toward goal, where it was knocked down by the goalkeeper and fell to Landen Kennedy, who buried the rebound to restore White’s lead at 2-1.
White extended its advantage before halftime. Hill broke free on a breakaway before Cam Tennis followed up the play, threading a shot through traffic to make it 3-1 heading into the break.
Green came out strong in the second half as Tanner Runyan sent a well-placed cross to Jonathan Carl, who scored his second goal of the afternoon to cut the deficit to 3-2.
White answered with just over 10 minutes remaining when Sam Rudy crashed into the attacking area and found the back of the net, giving White a 4-2 cushion.
Hill added his second goal of the match moments later, redirecting a floating pass with an impressive header to extend the lead to 5-2.
Green refused to go away quietly. Gabe Leach blasted home a goal from inside the box before Nolan Lohr converted a free kick from just outside the penalty area, driving the ball through the wall and past the goalkeeper to trim the margin to one.
Despite the late rally, White held on over the final six minutes to secure a 5-4 victory, earning its third consecutive win in the annual alumni matchup.
Following the game, the Webster family recognized several players and supporters with awards, thanking everyone for helping preserve Devin’s memory. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Devin K. Webster Memorial Scholarship Award.
