Wellsboro’s Winter Celebration 2017!
This past weekend, February 16 – 19, we experienced another wonderful Wellsboro Winter Celebration. Orchestrated by the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by First Citizens Community Bank and Wellsboro’s Sherwood Motel and Canyon Motel, this event brings together people of all ages to enjoy a multitude of activities and demonstrations including rally cars, “Bubble Mania,” ice carving, chilis to taste, a snowball hunt, a cross-country ski mini–clinic for beginners, music, theatre and much more—even a sled dog team!
Amy Jones spoke with Mary Beth Logue, a mid-distance dog sled racer from Trout Run, Pennsylvania, who brought her six friendly sled dogs, her sled, and examples of the items that are essential on a race day. “My dogs are friendly, so people can walk up to them,” she said. “It is tradition that a litter of Alaskan husky puppies be named based on a theme. The six dogs with me in Wellsboro are from the Wrangell-Elias National Park litter. McCarthy, Wrangell, Blackburn, Bonanza, Chitina and Elias are named for places in the park.” Many had the opportunity to greet the dogs and talk with Mary Beth. In the video Mary Beth also tells the story of how she became interested in sled dog racing.
We also met up with Pete Herres and Tim Morey of Step Outdoors who encouraged us to…step outdoors! They taught a cross-country skiing mini-clinic for beginners, where many of the children had their first experience with this enjoyable winter activity—even Julianna Vogt had her first try!
Another fun family event was the Deane Little Beans Winter Celebration Bubble Mania featuring Doug Rougeux. Imagine watching the “Bubble Man” use wands, straws, his bare hands, and his one-of-a-kind “Super Bubble Hoop” to make soaring, kissing, tightrope walking, space ship and popcorn machine bubbles during this entertaining, free, interactive event.
Adding to the excitement was a town-wide contest dubbed “The Great Snowball Hunt,” sponsored by KC 101 and The Fifth Season. Contestants searched local businesses for the 101 snowballs hidden throughout Wellsboro, each with a prize. The winner of the top prize-winning snowball was Hunter Hamblin, who went home with $101!
When Julianna spoke with Jeff Meyers of Elegant Ice Creations Inc. about his subject choices for the ice sculptures, he explained why he chose the fish sculpture: He loves to fish—it is one of his passions. So when he is not fishing, he enjoys creating ice fish!
Ultimately, although the weather was leaning towards spring for this year’s event, the Wellsboro Winter Celebration provided a weekend of fun, food, activities and entertainment for all who attended.
Mark your calendars for the third weekend in February next year and come and join us!
