Wellsboro Renews Wrestling Program for 2021
Following the 2017-18 season the Wellsboro Varsity and Junior High Wrestling program was halted due to declining numbers. That season the Hornets went 1-16, with their lone win coming against the Sayre Redskins. After a four-year hiatus the program has returned.
In 2020 the program participated in one tournament and one regular season match. Now, under the new leadership of Bryce Bitner, the Hornets are looking to return to their winning ways. Coach Bitner, a Central Mountain grad and former PIAA District VI 3A regional qualifier, will be joined by two-time NCAA All-American Andy Rendos (Bucknell University) and two-time NCAA Division I All-American Matt Pell (Missouri). Bitner began his coach his coaching career while a student at Lock Haven University with his former team, and former head coach Doug Buckwalter (PA Wrestling Hall of Fame) and Biff Walizer (NCAA All-American).
In addition to the Varsity and Junior High programs starting back up, the Little Hornet Wrestling Program for grades K-6 is also resuming. That program will start on January 5, 2022. Sign ups and a parent meeting will be held in mid December and will be run by the Varsity coaching staff.
For further information on Wellsboro wrestling at any level, please feel free to contact Coach Bitner at bbitner@wellsborosd.org.
