Wellsboro Highlights: 07/24/17 – 07/28/17

A week of Wellsboro Home Page feature highlights (and bloopers)!

by Home Page Staff - July 29-30, 2017

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

On the Radar – Community Vigilance
Here are a few things that you can do to make your community a safer place to live:
1.) Be seen in your neighborhood. Whether you are outside doing yard work, or taking the dog for a walk, when people take notice to the activity happening in their neighborhood, criminal activity decreases where there are extra eyes and ears.
2.) Get to know your neighbors and neighborhood. The more familiar you are with your surroundings, the more likely you are to notice suspicious or unusual activity in your neighborhood.
3.) Get involved with, or start a local neighborhood watch group.

Hijacking of the Brain
While some people would beg to differ, research indicates that addiction is a disease. The Hijacking of the Brain, presented by Carl Dawson, M.S., MUC, LPC, Q-SAC, addresses this controversy, among others, when talking about how stimulants, sedative-hypnotics, opioids, hallucinogens, depressants, and other drugs affect our body and brain. Articulate and genuinely honest, Carl Dawson provided exceptional research that addressed addiction as a disease that we, as a community, should be responsible for fighting against.

UPMC Susquehanna – Inside OB
Preparing to welcome a child is an exciting and sometimes daunting time, especially for new parents. Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital (SSMH) seeks to make pregnancy and delivery as smooth as possible with a family-friendly, spa-like atmosphere, expert obstetrics staff and its free series of expectant parents classes addressing common questions and concerns ahead of delivery.

Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital opened its doors on August 25, 1942, and the first baby was born shortly after—Patricia Molly Erway, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mason Erway, made her arrival at 3:30 am on August 26. Since then, the hospital has brought over 22,000 new lives into the world.

WWII Vet’s Life Forever Changed
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? Ask a child, and you’ll get a simple response. Ask a teenager, and you’ll gain a different perspective. Ask a 50-year-old ,and you’ll gain great wisdom. Ask a 99-year-old, and you better pay attention!

I recently had the opportunity to interview 99-year-old World War II veteran and Wellsboro native, Allen Scranton. As part of what some have called the greatest generation, Mr. Scranton has experienced great sorrow and great joy during his lifetime. He nearly lost his life fighting to defend the freedom we enjoy and learned some important lessons along the way. Fortunately, Allen made it home where he has been sharing the most important lesson of all ever since.

Movin’ Together – Digest This! Salad Up!
Joining Sara today on the latest Movin’ Together feature is Jen Davis, a registered dietician living and working here in Tioga County. Click here to watch today’s feature and learn more about the importance of salad greens and vegetables in maintaining a healthy diet.

Here are some of the dietary questions our guest has answered for us today in our feature story. But before you watch the video, make yourself a sumptuous plate of salad. There’s never a better time to start eating healthy, why not right now. Go on, we’ll wait for you!

• Why is the salad a great tool for the healthy tool basket?”
• What are cruciferous vegetables?
• What makes cruciferous vegetables bitter?
• Did you know there are eleven different kinds of vegetables in the cruciferous family?
• Does it matter when we eat our salad during our meal?
• What should we incorporate in our salad?
