Wellsboro Highlights: 03/06/17 – 03/10/17

A week of Wellsboro Home Page feature highlights!

by Home Page Staff - March 11-12, 2017

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

MU Beat – 150 Years of Baseball
Terry Day had the opportunity to speak with Steve McCloskey, Mansfield University’s Director of Sports Information, and asked him what comes to mind when thinking about 150 years of Mountie baseball. McCloskey replies that this year Mansfield University is celebrating the 160th anniversary of its founding, and the 150th year of its baseball program. “Our first athletic program was baseball; our first contest was a baseball game. One hundred fifty years ago, you would see a ragtag bunch of Wellsboro guys getting on a train to come to Mansfield to play the very first [Mansfield] baseball game. That game was actually played, not down at Smythe Park, which we associate with most of the baseball history of Mansfield, but where Marx Brothers is . . . so on that small, tiny field which is not even quite an acre, that first baseball game was played.”

Emergency 101 – Detect and Protect!
The National Fire Protection Association recommends that, at a minimum, smoke detectors be installed in every room where someone sleeps, as well as outside of every sleeping area. Smoke detectors should also be installed on every floor.

This includes levels of the house without bedrooms. Some other locations for smoke detectors include living rooms, dens, family rooms, hallways and in stairways.
Smoke detectors are usually easy to install with a screwdriver. Just follow the instruction manual that comes with the device.

Art from the Heart – Placemat Masterpieces
During the month of March, the National Art Education Association celebrates National Youth Art Month (NYAM), which recognizes art education and encourages support of the visual arts. NYAM began in 1961 and has been gaining momentum ever since. The theme for 2016-2017 is “United Through Art” and to increase community understanding and interest in art education we decided not only to celebrate the event in school, but to share creativity with the community through local restaurants.

Students created collages, paintings, and drawings of placemat ideas. They used various media such as pencils, colored pencils, paint, glue, crayons, permanent markers, and other materials that could undergo the lamination process.

Movin’ Together – Wonders of Water
On today’s episode of Movin’ Together, Sara Vogt and Aimee Jones discuss the power of hydration, along with ideas to help build the simple (but not always easy) habit of consuming more healthy fluids on a daily basis.

The second tool in our healthy tool basket for the year—hydration—which we fondly call the fountain of youth, is critically important to well-being, but it is an element of health that is often overlooked or taken for granted, and it can take some real motivation to create the habit of consuming the optimal amount of fluids that your body needs.

Cooking with Dad – Chili with Added Value
Place your beans, tomatoes, salsa, corn, onions and carrots in the slow cooker.

Brown the ground beef and then add it in with the other ingredients in the crockpot. Stir all the contents together.

Place your crockpot on low for about 8 hours.

After 8 hours your chili will be ready and you can serve it over a bed of brown rice, or eat it as is with a warm Hawaiian roll.
