Wellsboro Football Preview 2017
The 2016 Wellsboro Football season was another great that saw the Hornets finish with an 11-1 record, an undefeated regular season, and their fourth NTL Championship. Now for the 2017 season the Hornets are ready to showcase their talents on the brand new Wellsboro Community Athletic Complex.
Head Coach: Matt Hildebrand (5th year, 39-8)
2016 Season Record: 11-1
Key Returners: Quinn Henry, Collin Pietropola, Dalton Prough, Brent English, Alex Kozuhowski, Chase Moser, Robert Brown, Hunter Brown
Players to Watch: Quinn Henry and Dalton Prough, Alex Kozuhowski, Chase Moser, Aidan Hauser
Last season Wellsboro had their third undefeated regular season, and their second in four years, under head coach Matt Hildebrand, but saw their season crumble in the final four seconds to South Williamsport in the District IV AA semi-finals, after shutting out seven out of 10 NTL opponents in the regular season. This season, however, the Hornets are back and better than ever in 2017.
Leading the charge for Wellsboro this year is senior quarterback Quinn Henry. After an injury held him out of the second half of the South Williamsport game, Henry is back and faster than ever and will look to run circles around Wellsboro’s opponents this season.
Behind a solid offensive line of Collin Pietropola, Brent English, Robert Brown, Hunter Brown, and Tyler Hancock, Henry and other weapons Dalton Prough, Chase Moser, Alex Kozuhowski, and Aidan Hauser will look to have breakout years. Those four accumulated 4,676 total yards and with another year under their belt, could put up big numbers again this year.
Wellsboro will have to find a way to replace Parker Jones at tight end, Kaleb Smith, Taylor Baker, and Ethan Nichols on the line due to graduation. Look for sophomore Billy Lechler to see snaps at tight end and returning players like English, Hancock, and Robert Brown to fill the offensive line spots to lead the high-energy Hornets.
The Hornets kick off their season this Friday, August 25 in the first of a four-game home stand against Canton at the new Wellsboro Community Athletic Complex at 7:00 p.m.
