Hornets Survive Late Surge, Edge Tigers 45–42 in Playoff Thriller
The postseason opened with plenty of drama Tuesday night as the Wellsboro Hornets battled past the North Penn-Mansfield Tigers, escaping with a hard-fought 45–42 victory in the opening round of the district basketball playoffs.
North Penn-Mansfield struck first when Jason Harer fed Andy Hermansen in the post for an early layup. Wellsboro quickly answered, with Luke Rothermel powering into the paint for the Hornets’ first basket. Colin Fletcher then gave Wellsboro a spark from long range, knocking down a smooth three-pointer. Rothermel capped the opening quarter by cleaning up a rebound to give the Hornets a 13–10 lead heading into the second.
Wellsboro kept the momentum early in the second period as Griffin Moral attacked the rim with a strong drive. The Tigers responded behind Hermansen, who continued to control the post for easy points. Fletcher later found a seam in the defense and finished at the basket, helping the Hornets extend their lead. Still, North Penn-Mansfield stayed within striking distance thanks to a Hermansen buzzer-beater that made it 23–16 at halftime.
The Hornets came out firing in the third quarter, with Fletcher burying his second three of the night. Moral followed with a strong drive that nearly pushed Wellsboro’s lead into double digits. But the Tigers refused to fold. Patrick Youmans jump-started a comeback effort, and Harer added a baseline drive as North Penn-Mansfield found its rhythm. By the end of the quarter, the Tigers had trimmed the deficit to 30–24.
The fourth quarter brought the biggest swings of the night. Jonathan Carl muscled inside to open the scoring for Wellsboro, but the Tigers answered when Kevin Clemente-Vazquez drained a clutch three that tightened the game. Moments later, Harer powered through the defense for a go-ahead basket with under six minutes remaining, setting up a tense finish.
From there, the teams traded blows until Wellsboro sealed the game at the free-throw line. The Hornets scored their final five points on foul shots, holding off the Tigers just enough to secure the 45–42 victory and advance to the next round.
Both teams capped off strong seasons with a memorable battle, and Wellsboro now turns its focus to the next challenge — a road matchup at Warrior Run on Thursday night, with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
