Wellsboro Boys Soccer Shuts Out Galeton, 5-0
The Wellsboro Hornets boys soccer team hosted the Galeton Tigers on Tuesday, September 15, earning a dominant 5-0 shutout victory.
The first half started as a defensive battle, with neither team able to find the back of the net early. Wellsboro eventually broke through when a corner kick from Callen Novak created an opportunity in front of the goal. Although the Tigers initially deflected the attempt, Octavian Wyman beat a defender outside the box and fired a shot over the keeper’s fingertips to give the Hornets the lead.
Wellsboro carried that momentum into the second half.
Just two minutes after the break, Liam Stevens raced past the Galeton defense before slowing the ball and crossing it into the center of the box for Gabe Cuneo, who buried the shot in the upper ninety to make it 2-0.
The Hornets struck again shortly afterward. Cuneo sent the ball into the box, where Stevens drew the defense with a fake, leaving Colin Fletcher with an open opportunity. Fletcher capitalized, finding the net at a difficult angle to extend Wellsboro’s lead to 3-0.
With 31 minutes remaining in regulation, Fletcher nearly added another goal when his shot rang off the crossbar. Mason Brill was there to finish the opportunity with a beautiful header, giving Wellsboro a 4-0 advantage and earning the Blaise Alexander Play of the Game.
The Hornets weren’t finished.
With 29 minutes left on the clock, Brill delivered a free kick into the box, where James Doughtie powered a shot toward the near post and found the back of the net.
Wellsboro held on for the remainder of the match, securing a convincing 5-0 shutout victory over Galeton.
The Hornets will return to the pitch on Thursday, September 17, when they host the Athens Wildcats.
