Wellsboro concludes Basketball Season

Hornets fall to Minersville in first round of PIAA playoffs

by Ed Weaver - March 7, 2016

The Wellsboro boys and girls basketball teams both suffered losses to Minersville in the first round of PIAA State playoffs on Friday and Saturday, March 4-5.

Girls – Minersville 59, Wellsboro 30

The Lady Hornets played tough in the first quarter and hung with the state’s undefeated (27-0 entering Friday’s game) No. 1 ranked team in Class AA. Minersville struggled hitting open shots and senior Jada Jackson scored 4 tough points to go along with junior Janessa Davis’ opening basket to knot the score up at 6-6 after the first quarter.

Just like last week in the Lady Hornets’ loss to Mount Carmel in the District IV AA championship game, the Lady Hornets fell behind after being tied after the first quarter. Minersville went on a 10-0 run to start the second. Jackson eventually scored back-to-back baskets to get the Lady Hornets going. Minersville managed to outscore Wellsboro 16-10 in the quarter, but Wellsboro cut the gap to 6 points as they trailed 22-16 at halftime.

Minersville put the game away in the third quarter as they came out on fire from behind the three-point line to outscore Wellsboro 24-9. Wellsboro’s woes continued in the fourth as they only managed to score 5 points while Minersville scored 13 to eliminate the Lady Hornets.

Sophomore Lizzie Poirier scored 11 points to lead the team, while Jackson finished with 8 points and 4 rebounds in her last game, and senior Sarah Ingerick finished with 7 points in her final game of her career. Ingerick finished the season with 309 points, her third consecutive year with over 300 points, giving her 1,089 for her career. Jackson finished her career with 623 points and 624 rebounds. Davis and sophomore Rachael Tuttle rounded out the scoring on the night with 2 points each.

Wellsboro concludes their season with an 18-8 record, an 8-win improvement from last season, while finishing as the District IV Class AA runner up.

Boys – Minersville 42, Wellsboro 33

After trailing early the Hornets battled back to take the lead as sophomore Quinn Henry cut through the lane, sank the shot, and was fouled. Henry put the Hornets up 7-6 with 2:05 left in the quarter, and and three-pointer from junior Jacob Singer put Wellsboro up 10-6 after the first.

Turnovers plagued the Hornets in the second quarter as Minersville would score three early baskets to take the lead and they would never look back. Minersville outscored Wellsboro 15-6 in the quarter as the Hornets had trouble finishing shots to take a 21-16 lead at the half.

The Hornets cut into the lead to two points a couple of times in the third but never got closer than that. Minersville ended the third up 27-23, then outscored Wellsboro 15-10 to send the Hornets home with a loss.

Brothers Dawson Prough and Dalton Prough led the team with 9 points each, Henry scored 7 to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals, Singer had 6, and junior Alden Weiner had 2 to round out the scoring.

Dawson Prough finishes his Wellsboro career with 619 points, 121 assists, 77 steals, and 242 rebounds.

The Hornets’ end the season with a 17-9 record.
