Wellsboro 6th Graders Aim for Robotics Invitationals
The Wellsboro Area School District Middle School Robotics program is making waves in only its second year of existence, with remarkable success on the regional and state stage. Two teams from the program qualified for the Pennsylvania FIRST Lego League State Competition this year—but one team, The Spark Flyers, soared even higher.
After an impressive showing, The Spark Flyers earned a coveted spot at the American Robotics Invitational, a prestigious national-level competition held May 17–18, 2025, at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The team’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Competing against over 380 teams from across Pennsylvania—many from larger, better-funded programs with more experience – The Spark Flyers, made up entirely of sixth graders, proved that determination, creativity, and teamwork can triumph over the odds.
Throughout the season, The Spark Flyers collected a number of top honors:
– 1st Place Core Values Award, recognizing outstanding teamwork, cooperation, and “Gracious Professionalism”
– 1st Place Robot Performance Award, for achieving the highest competition score on the board
– 1st Place Champion’s Award, the highest overall score based on robot design, innovation project, and teamwork
– 2nd Place Innovation Project Award, for creating and presenting a device to filter microplastics from ocean water, aligned with this year’s “Submerged” theme
Behind these achievements are months of intense work. Since last summer, the seven students have balanced academics, sports, music, theater, and robotics—logging countless hours learning, building, coding, testing, and fundraising.
Now, as they prepare to represent Wellsboro on the national stage, The Spark Flyers are seeking support from the community to help cover the estimated $8,000–$10,000 needed for travel, lodging, meals, and competition fees. Local businesses and organizations interested in sponsoring the team will not only help these young innovators reach their goal but also invest in the future of STEM education in Wellsboro. Any funds raised beyond the immediate needs of the trip will go toward the continued growth of the Wellsboro Robotics Program.
