Welcome to Creature Care!

by Dr John Weiner - August 14, 2015

I wanted to become a vet before I was old enough to know what a vet actually was or even did, other than care for animals. For me, it was simply instinctive. As I grew older and read the books and saw the movies and television programs that idealized the life of the rural veterinarian – it all helped to confirm that this was for me. There could be no better career, no other vocation for me other than one where I could work with animals.

The one challenge to this, in over 25 years of clinical veterinary practice, is that I have never yet had an animal walk into my office or call me to the farm because they needed and wanted my care. There is always a human – a person – seeking care for an animal that is involved.

From the wildlife roaming free around us to the farm animals who provide food and a way of life, to the companion pets both big and small that reside with us, our lives are intertwined with those of the animals in our care.

Ask anyone who has ever loved an animal to reminisce about a moment that stands out most for them and you may quickly get a name like “Beauty”, “ Charcoal,” “Tiger,” or “Max” – and with that name a smile. A sparkle, or perhaps a tear may appear in their eyes as a story unfolds. Stories of joy, tenderness, and emotion – stories that span years or that perhaps involve a human animal encounter that was oh, so painfully short. These stories of service, and of friendship, stories of pain and of pain relief are the stories of the our human lives woven with those of the creatures in our care. These are the stories that we are going to share with you on Wellsboro Home Page’s ‘Creature Care’ segment.

Dr John Weiner, DVM will bring you the animals and their people, how we care for them…and how they care for us. Stay tuned for the next enjoyable and informative feature of ‘Creature Care’ here on the Wellsboro Home Page.

Story suggestions and comments welcomed! Please email Dr John Weiner, DVM at creaturecare@pvvc.net
