The Weekly Highlights 09/15/14 – 09/19/14

A look at this week's highlights on Wellsboro Home Page

by Home Page Staff - September 20, 2014

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

WELLSBORO HORNETS BEST THE BUCKS

The Hornets scored early and often after a 63 yard pass from Mike Pietropola to Nick Marple set up a three yard touchdown pass from Pietropola to Nick Levindoski. On their next possession, Pietropola found Kieron Smethers in the corner of the end zone – giving the hornets a 14-0 advantage. The Hornets held a 57-0 lead by halftime.

In the second half the Hornets let many of their younger players gain some experience. Early in the second half, the Bucks broke the shutout when Aaron Ransdorf dashed 62 yards for the score. The Hornets recovered quickly after backup quarterback Brandon Lamphier ran for his first two touchdowns of the year, going 24 and 50 yards respectively.

The Bucks made a late attempt at points with a nearly successful hook and lateral play, but Wellsboro’s defense held on for a 71-6 victory.

THE WINE & ART FESTIVAL WEEKEND!

This weekend will be the Wellsboro Wine & Art Tour. On Saturday, the Wine & Art tour will consist of 10-12 downtown businesses that will each feature wine tasting from 1:00-6:00pm, paired with hors d’oeuvres and accompanied by a local artisan, author, or musician. Wine and Design will also be present at The Deane Center lobby.

The following weekend continues with fun activities, as the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce golf outing is held on Friday September 26. This “make your own four-person scramble” will begin at 9:00am with a continental breakfast, followed by a 10:00am shotgun start. There are many on-course prizes, and lunch & dinner will be provided.

Mountain bikers won’t want to miss the 20th Annual Laurel Classic being held Saturday, September 27. Registration begins at 8:30am. There are events for all levels of mountain bikers.

LEARN, DISCOVER, DO!

Scouting is learning by discovery, and discovery by doing. Scouting is where skills are learned, confidence built, and stories are born. Scouts get to participate in many fun, skill & character building activities, including field trips to historical sites, police headquarters, fire departments and more. Scouts also hold pinewood derby competitions where the boys build their own wooden cars and race them against other scouts. Other activities include archery, rock climbing, push-mobile races and more! All boys in grades 1-5 are eligible to join cub scouts. Boy scouts receive boys from grade 6 to 18 years of age. To learn more about scouting, visit www.fiverivers.org or contact The Scout Service Center at The Arnot Mall at (607) 796-0699.

MAY THE HORSE BE WITH YOU

On Thursday’s feature, Home Page made a trip to the Drew Quarter Horse farm to talk with Sue & Lee Drew and their daughter, Patti. Sue and Lee shared about the family farm and the services they offer for the community. We learned that quarter horses are one the most versatile breeds, and work very well with children. Patti Drew graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Equine Business Management and a Bachelor of Science in Equestrian Studies, Western Training emphasis. She gave Johanna a lesson – you can watch it too in the video above!

For more information on Drew Quarter Horses, you can visit their website at DrewQuarterHorses.com.

HONOR VETS AT POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY

On today’s feature we sit down with Colonel Eldon Cummings and Master Sergeant Clare R. Emery to discuss the POW/MIA DAY gathering taking place this evening at 6:30 PM on The Green in Wellsboro. Attendees are asked to be there at about 6:15 PM, if possible. The American Legion and VFW will once again present their very moving POW/MIA ceremony. The seven sisters of Robert Mase of Blossburg who went MIA in the Korean War are expected to attend. Many of the “Rolling Thunder” Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA) PA Chapter 22-6 are also planning to attend. Please make every effort to be on The Green this evening to make a clear statement that WE WILL NEVER FORGET OUR POW/MIAs.

Master Sergeant Clare R. Emery gives us the run down on this evening’s events and Colonel Eldon Cummings tells us why it’s so important for us to be there. For those Wellsboro Home Page viewers who would like to do more to help our service men and women, you can contact Dawn Pletcher at Goodies For Our Troops, 87 Main Street, Wellsboro, PA. Phone: 570-662-5601 or Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, Inc. at PAwoundedwarriors.org.
