TAKE A RIDE BACK IN TIME!

Tioga County is full of fun opportunities and unique experiences. The Ole Covered Wagon Tours is a family owned and operated business. They provide guided tours of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon area in a horse-drawn covered wagon – similar to those used in the 1800’s. The tour guides are fluent in the history of the Canyon going back to the 19th century. Enjoy the scenic views and rich history of our county as you travel down the Pine Creek Rail trail. “It’s an interesting ride, it’s very set back,” says Co-Owner, Russ Daggett. “Not much has changed [in the area] since the late 1700s to 1800s. When you get in the wagon with a team of horses up front…it sets you back in time.”

For more information, or to reserve seats – visit their website at www.olecoveredwagon.com. Book your trip to the past, today!

THE WORLD IS BUT A CANVAS

Their birth of a vision began through barn restoration! When Jeff Thomas and Tania O’Donnell started restoring Jeff’s childhood barn, they began sensing how great this barn might be. They envisioned bringing professional artists/teachers and art students together. Now, in their third year and many workshops later, their dreams have become evident in all they do at the Red Barn Art Center. “We were just looking for ways to have art happen in the barn,” says Jeff.

The last workshop for this summer is this weekend: August 15, 16 and 17. The class is “en Plein Air” (meaning “in the open air,” for outdoor landscapes) with Ron Donoughe from Pittsburgh, PA.

To register for the class go to: www.redbarnartscenter.com/summer-2014-in-wellsboro or call Red Barn Arts Center at 484-320-0219.

THE KYLE LENHARDT MEMORIAL 5K

As many of you can unfortunately remember, in June of 2011, 15-year-old Kyle Lenhardt suffered a fatal asthma attack as he slept. His family has organized many events in his honor to keep his memory alive throughout the community. On Saturday August 16, 2014 there will be a 5K memorial walk/run at the Tioga County Fairgrounds. Runners and walkers are both welcome! All of the proceeds raised at the events will benefit a scholarship in Kyle’s name at the Wellsboro Area High School.

There will also be a yardsale at the fairgrounds with thousands of items donated from families around the area. Lunch will be provided as well.

THE 13th BLUEGRASS HICKORY FEST!

The 13th Annual Blugrass Music Hickory Fest began Friday, the 15th (and continues through Sunday, the 17th) at the Stony Fork Creek Campground. Home Page correspondent Drew Patrick met the event promoter, Sue Cunningham, and found out more about the festival. The Hickory Fest brings in musicians from all over the east coast and our own county. The musicians enjoy coming to the area to share their love for bluegrass and acoustic music. Part of what makes this festival special is the involvement the crowd has during the weekend. During and after performances, many audience members will play along with the musicians and other audience members. The Hickory Fest also provides workshops in which anyone can participate. “It’s music that gets everyone involved,” says Cunningham. “I think that’s what makes it so unique.”

THE HORNETS SHARPEN THEIR STINGERS

After an undefeated 2013 season and bringing home the Morton F. Jones Trophy two years in a row, the Hornets are home and back on the practice field getting ready for the 2014 season.

Head Coach Matt Hildebrand told Home Page, “We have a great freshman class to go with our stout senior class. We have 16 seniors coming back to help with our new group.” Assistant Coach Mike Pietropolia Sr. also stated, “They are working hard and trying to stay healthy.”

This summer, the Hornets won the opportunity to represent the Buffalo Bills after winning both the district and regional tournaments in the NFL’s National High School Player Development competition. The NFL flew the Hornets to Indianapolis on July 13th where they competed against top teams from around the country. “The (7-on-7) Tournament was a great experience for us. Facing top notch competition, ups the competition,” said quarterback Mike Pietroplia. Wide Recever Kieron Smethers echoed, “I took away how to really play the game, and where to be at the right time.”

Home Page had the opportunity to speak with Head Coach Hildebrand during their practice. He noted his “biggest concern is complacency, coming off a season like we had last year, it’s easy to take for granted the things that happened last year and think it’s just gonna happen without the work…we preach you need to continue to work everyday.”

Home Page wishes the Hornets the very best as they start their season, August 29th at Cowanesque Vally.
